Experience our Nation's True History!
The Navajo and Hopi cultures together represent the largest and longest standing intact native American populations. Their lands encompass some of the southwest's most stunning scenery, where 120 mile vistas are possible. Beyond the stunning natural beauty, this exclusive tour offers an up close exploration of a culture preserved from a time long past. The Navajo Nation is the largest native American tribe in the United States while the Hopi claim continuous residence on their mesas for over 2000 years. On this special exploration, we will be welcomed into the homeland and special places within their living history.
Day 1 - The tour departs Phoenix for Sedona's red rock country around 7:00 am. There will be some time for sightseeing in Sedona and to pick up our lunch for later. Traveling north through Oak Creek Canyon, we approach Flagstaff and the 12,633 foot, volcanic San Francisco peaks. Upon arrival at the South Rim of Grand Canyon, there are many options including helicopter tours and hiking. Dinner and overnight stay are in Grand Canyon National Park.
Day 2 - Today begins with an early departure for the East Rim Drive of Grand Canyon National Park. The drive provides many dramatic views of the eastern end of the Grand Canyon. We will be traveling across the vast open lands of the 16.5 million acre Navajo Nation. We will reach the famous spires and buttes of Monument Valley in the late afternoon. A sunset jeep tour of Monument Valley will be guided by Navajo natives who know the land and the lore of the Dine people. Dinner and overnight are in Kayenta.
Day 3 - After breakfast, we make the 70 mile trip to Canyon de Chelly, the the second largest canyon system in the country, right behind Grand Canyon.l Step into the past as Canyon de Chelly's towering sandstone cliffs and mysterious ruins invite you for a glimpse of the ancient civilizations of the Four Corners region. Your first experience in Canyon de Chelly will be a breathtaking tour of the canyon rim right before lunch. After lunch, Navajo guides lead you into the heart of the canyon system for some great storytelling and an up close look at the 1000 year old dwellings of the long departed and little understood Anasazi Indians. Dinner and overnight are in Chinle.
Day 4 - We will depart after breakfast for a very scenic drive to the historic Hubble Trading Post. The Hubble is a national historic site and the oldest trading post in the Navajo Nation. The Hopi mesas await with an early afternoon arrival. Your Hopi experience is an authentic exploration of this ancient and private culture. The Hopi people have occupied their 3 mesas for the past 3000-4000 years. These mesas are truly the home of the native tribes. A personal presentation of the Hopi culture will be given by Milland Lomakema, the Director of the Hopi Arts and Crafts Guild. Milland's presentation will include an artist demonstration and a traditional dinner prepared and served in a Hopi home in the village of Shungopavi. Overnight accommodations are at the Hopi Cultural Center Hotel.
Day 5 - The morning of our departure from the Hopi mesas includes an opportunity to visit a location that has restricted access and showcases the work of the Hopi's ancestors. This expansive collection of petroglyphs and wall art in the box canyon of Dawah Park will be something that you will remember for a lifetime. We will travel across seemingly endless desert lands of the Hopi and Navajo as we approach Flagstaff and the San Francisco Peaks.
